Choi Geum-Nyeo: Poet and Winner (Poetry Section) of the '8th Seoul Culture Today Culture Awards'

Poet Choi Keum-Nyeo assesses that her poems are getting more progressive.

Poet Choi Keum-Nyeo makes an award acceptance speech at the ceremony of the Seoul Culture Today Culture Awards held in Seoul in January 2017.

[Special Interview]

Many people remember journalist-turned-poet Choi Keum-Nyeo as a very modest poet. Even though her husband Shin Gyeong-Wik was an influential politician from the late 1980s to the early 2000s as a four-time ruling party lawmaker, Choi said she did not realize her spouse's power nor did she enjoy the power at that time.

She added that she could not but be shocked at the current nation-rocking corruption and influence-peddling scandal involving the now-ousted former president Park Geun-Hye and her long-time friend Choi Soon-Sil.

Choi, who used to live as the wife a mighty politician for years, has now returned to the world of poetry to dedicate herself to writing her own poems. In an effort to share her lifestyle and ideas about the world of her poems, the Seoul Culture Today recently met with Choi, who has published her new anthology of poetry, titled "One Line, or Two Lines", which is printed on Hanji, or traditional handmade Korean paper.

Q. The SCT understands that you made a long journey after receiving the prize (Poetry Section) of the Seoul Culture Today Culture Awards in January.

Yes, I spent about 20 days abroad this time. The trip was made to rest my mind after resigning as the chair of the Korea Association of Female Writers (영문이름 확인요), which I had been for two years. But I was not that comfortable during the journey. Getting selves in a dither may be a disease of all the people living in this contemporary society.

It does not matter whether a journey does good to you or hurt you. It's as light as a lagniappe in your life. From time to time, a bumpy flight reminds me of my bucket list. Seriously...(Laughter). A journey could be seen as an opportunity for me to leave a will behind, which I have not wrapped up yet....

Q. You published the anthology of poetry 'One Line, or Two Lines' in 2015. Its content and poetic language are said to be lively and interesting.

Are they? (Laughter) I appreciate your compliment. These days, there are many poems which some ordinary readers find difficult to comprehend. Poetry, in nature, awards high grades to unfamiliarities. Some say, "Poems which are easy to read are not poems."

Rainer Maria Rilke (a Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist) said a poem is an "experience" and has a thousand faces. As such, The world of poetry is diverse and borderless. I think that ambiguousness and evasiveness are the proper functions of poetry.

Q. Another poem ‘I'd Like to Buy Meals for the Wind" also looks refreshing.

The verses (of the poem) naturally popped up to me upon my arrival at a bank of the Yalu River. I just wrote what I felt at that time. My family members escaped from the North to the South during the Korean War. It was when I was very young but I miss my hometown in North Korea very much. I was glad to see the wind, river, and trees in the North.

Q. In general, poets seem to have a special love for nature.

It would not be exaggerating to say that those who love nature are poets. As a matter of fact, many poets love to travel around to enjoy nature. There is even some saying, "If it's hard to write a good poem, you'd better hold converse with nature." Poets use nature for what they write. It's very natural and clear that nature is the object of the poets' affections.

Q. You have published a total of seven collections and one anthology of poems. Could you detail what you wanted to tell their readers?

I'm not a prolific writer at all. (Laughter). Although I've been working extremely hard but it's really difficult for me to find a good work I am truly content with. My best wish is to publish a really decent collection of my poems. Writing a poem is engaging and fulfilling as it is hard to produce a decent one. Who on earth will dedicate their lifetime to writing poems if they can write a good poem overnight?

Q. Your original background is from journalism. Was there any breakthrough?

Even during the seven to eight years as a journalist, my literary work was going on as writing is closely related to the job of a journalist. I don't think that I've changed my job. I was just belated in devoting myself to writing full time. I actually wanted to be a novelist but soon I found myself not fit for novels.

Q. While you were a newspaper reporter, you tied the knot with the former lawmaker and fellow journalist Shin Gyeong-Sik, and suspended your literary activities for a while as the wife of a politician.

The wedding with him made me sorely postpone my debut to the literary circle, and since then I had to bury my own literature into the country roads I took for electioneering campaign for him and dedicated 24 years to serving him and my children as well.

If we had known that politics is such an enormous deal, we would not have stepped into the political world. It was terrible and most parts of my journal in the past are filled with curses over politics. I was destined to part from politics.

Q. Could you tell us about the five decade-old Korea Association of Female Writers?

Established in 1965, the Korea Association of Female Writers is a women writers' organization. The country's 25 big-name female literary figures, such as Park Hwa-Seong, Moh Yoon-Sook, Cho Kyung-Hee, Kim Nam-Jo, Kim Hu-Ran, Jung Yeon-Hee, and Huh Yeong-Ja, have grown the association to date. It's the matrix of Korea's female literary world.

Q. What is your idea about some criticism over lyric poems as unrealistic?

I (as a lyric poet) cannot but hesitate to respond if asked about the role of poetry in the current national situation. Some people assert that poets should play a leading role in dealing with the current issues but some others say poets should put distance from those issues. I, personally -- not as a poet, am worried about the current national situation very much. But I agree that poems are not qualified to play a role in performing such tasks including renovating the structure of society or helping alleviate poverty. Of course, I don't think that poets have nothing to do with the community either.

Q. There is an increasing number of people who love poems. What do you think is the best way to get more familiar with poetry?

The increasing number of poem lovers could be interpreted as that the community is getting better. It's a good phenomenon. Emotivity comes first prior to any others in the world of poetry. If you read a poem which really touches your heart, you will be mesmerized by it in spite of yourself.

Q. What type of poems you would like to write?

I am still studying poems. I would like my poems to get younger. Is there anything better than youth? Literature may be like a marathon race. Until the last day of my life, I will not only read and write but also try to pursue a new direction, though I don't know yet that I will be able to do so. (Laughter)
