모든 표면은 깊이를 가지고 있다. 표면은 그저 표면이 아닌, 깊이가 자기를 밀어 올린 것이다. 정보적 사실은 감각적 실재가 자기를 밀어 올린 것이고, 그렇게 그림자에는 감각적 실재가 함축돼 있다. 정상곤 작가의 작업은 바로 그런 표면과 깊이와의 상호작용에 관한 것이다.
표면을 통해서 깊이를, 정보적 사실을 통해서 감각적 실재를, 추상적 실재(그림자)를 통해서 실체를, 평면을 통해서 움직이는 것을, 정지(혹은 순간)를 통해서 시간을 이야기하기란 쉽지가 않다. 작가의 작업은 아날로그를 디지털로 확장하는 것이 아니라, 디지털을 아날로그 쪽으로 역확장한다.
세계를 기호화하는 것이 디지털의 기획이라고 이해한다면, 세계를 개념화하는 것(인식작용)에 이미 디지털은 예고되고 있었다. 여기서 풍경은 각별한 의미를 갖는다. 작가의 작업에서 풍경은 기호와 개념이 파열되면서 그 틈새로 자기를 밀어 올린 실재의 살(메를로퐁티의 우주적 살)이 전개되는 지평이다. 그렇게 작가는 풍경을 그리는 것이 아니라 풍경처럼 보이는 그림을 그리고 있었고, 실재의 꼴을 그리고 있었다.

Every surface has depth. A surface is not just a surface, but that depth went up to the surface by itself. An informational fact is that the sensuous real went up by itself, and thus a shadow implies the sensuous real.
Chung’s works are about the interaction of the surface and the depth. t is not a easy work to show a depth through a surface, the sensuous real through informational facts, substance through the abstract real — the shadows —, a moving object through a plane, and time through a standstill — or a moment. He expands analogue to digital, but conversely, digital to analogue.
If we can understand that representing the world as the sign is the planning of digital, we will realize it was already foretold that digital will conceptualize the world — cognition. The landscape here has a significant meaning. the landscape in his works is the horizon where the flesh of the real — What Merleau-Ponty called the cosmic flesh — that went up by itself to the gap between the sign and the concept unfolds. Hence, Chung does not draw a landscape, but draws a landscape-looking picture, a figure of the real.
