라이프치히 도서전은 매년 3월 독일 라이프치히에서 열리는 책과 문화의 향연으로 17세기부터 시작된 가장 역사가 깊은 국제도서전이다. 이 도서전은 출판업의 활성화와 세계 시장 교류를 목적으로 하는 여타의 상업적 도서전과는 달리 철저히 책을 중심으로 다방면의 문화적 활성화를 추구한다는 특징을 가지고 있다.
도심 전역에서는 책의 내용과 의미를 소통하는 낭독회 등 3천여개의 출판문화 프로그램이 펼쳐지고 시상식, 교육 프로그램 등이 진행되며 도서전에 맞춰 독일의 서적예술재단(Stiftung Buchkunst)이 해마다 개최하는 '세계에서 가장 아름다운 책' 국제공모전 수상작을 발표하고 전시한다.
시내 곳곳에서는 '라이프치히는 책을 읽는다'라는 이름 아래 책과 관련된 행사와 페스티벌이 열리고 이 행사들은 모두 매진 사례를 이루고 있다. 독일 국내외 정치 및 문화계 인사들의 꾸준한 방문도 화제다. 노벨 문학상을 수상했던 귄터 그라스, 젊은 작가 벤야민 레베스트 등 명사들이 도서전을 찾고 자신들의 신작을 직접 낭독하는 프로그램이 쉼없이 이어지기도 한다.
사단법인 국제문화도시교류협회(이하 국도협)가 운영하는 한국관은 그동안 한글(2013), 한식(2014), 한복(2015), 한옥(2016)을 주제로 진행했으며 매년 우리 문화의 중요한 테마 한 가지를 선정해 도서 및 문헌 전시 중심으로 다양한 연계 프로그램과 함께 한국문화의 우수성을 세계에 널리 홍보하고 이를 통해 한국문화를 새로이 집대성하고 있다.
특히 지난해에는 '한국전통건축'을 주제로 한국전통건축 관련 우수 컨텐츠와 인문학적 깊이를 방문객들에게 효과적으로 소개하고 이들 콘텐츠를 기반으로 한국문화와 독어권, 유럽권 문화 간 교류와 소통의 활로를 마련했다. 총 나흘 간 약 1만명 이상의 관람객이 한국관을 방문해 한국전통건축 관련 우수 콘텐츠를 관람했고 설명을 들었으며 문헌전시와 영상전시를 병행해 디지털 시대의 새로운 도서전시 양식을 선보이며 방문객들의 호응을 이끌어냈다.
이 중 '소쇄원 광풍각 축조과정' 영상은 건축 전문가뿐만 아니라 일반인, 어린이 등 다양한 방문객들의 관심을 끌었고 한국전통건축 관련 고문헌 영인본, 올해의 주제도서(한국어, 독일어, 영어), 특별전시도서(영어) 등이 관람객들의 많은 관심을 받았다.화성성역의궤(華城城役儀軌) 등 총 9권 61책도 의미있는 전시로 꼽혔다. 전시장 벽체는 구본창 사진작가의 한국전통건축 관련 사진작품으로 전시돼 한국의 미를 한껏 드러냈다.
또한 독일 국립도서관, 함부르크대학, 드레스덴대학 등이 한국 도서를 구매하고 싶다는 강한 희망을 밝히며 한국 도서의 독일 대학도서관 진출 가능성을 확인했고 독일어권, 유럽권역에서 활동하고 있는 한국인들과 연계해 문화 루트를 만들어 유럽 문화권 내 한국문화 네트워크의 내실을 다졌으며 하루 평균 50여명 이상의 한국 애호가들이 한국관을 방문해 전시 도서를 살펴보고, 한국관 운영자들과 한국의 문화, 출판, 최근 한국 현안 등 관심 부분에 대해 소통하고 교류했다.
국도협은 "네 차례 한국관 운영사업을 통해 우리 문화 기록의 빈틈, 부실한 면들을 적잖이 발견했다. '라이프치히 도서전 한국관 운영사업'은 한국 문화를 전 세계에 알리는 홍보수단일 뿐 아니라, 빈틈을 메워 나가는, 한국문화 기록의 대안을 만들어나가는 사업이어야함을 절실히 느꼈다"고 밝혔다.
이를 바탕으로 국도협은 매해 한국관 운영사업을 진행하면서 한국 문화를 외국어로 소개하는 우수한 책들을 만들고 있으며 해외 시장에 내놓아 해외 독자들에게 우리 문화가 손쉽게 전달될 수 있도록 하고 있다. 국도협은 "'한국문화 콘텐츠의 해외 홍보'와 더불어 '한국문화 콘텐츠의 해외 시장 진출'을 가장 큰 목표로 삼고 있으며 이는 한국문화의 세계화, 대중화에 기여하는 가장 현실적이고 실천적인 방안이 될 것"이라고 밝혔다.
올해는 '한국음악'을 주제로 한국음악과 관련한 역사적, 사상적, 문화적, 예술적 지식과 정보가 담긴 다양한 도서를 수집 전시하며, 한국음악과 관련된 고문헌 및 미디어 자료들을 함께 전시한다. 엄선한 한국음악 관계 도서 및 문헌 200여 종이 전시되며 한국의 음악문화를 입체적으로 체험할 수 있는 여러 종의 영상이 상영된다.
또한 도서전을 찾는 다양한 관람객들을 위해 한국관의 주제 및 전시도서, 다양한 연계 프로그램을 안내하는 '2017 라이프치히 도서전 한국관 저널'을 한국어, 독일어, 영어판으로 발행하고 '올해의 주제도서' 3권을 역시 한국어, 독일어, 영어로 번역 발행한다.
주제도서는 한국음악 속 사상과 철학, 문화적 전통 등을 설명하는 <우리가락 우리문화>(한명희 저), 한국의 전통음악과 전통악기를 사진과 함께 설명하는 <한국음악 한국악기>(송혜진 글, 강운구 사진), 우리 음악사의 중요한 문헌인 '한금신보(韓琴新譜)'와 이를 둘러싼 한 가문의 음악인들의 이야기인 <한금신보와 밀양 박씨 가문의 음악 이야기>(박수준 저)다.
이와 함께 도서전 기간 중 베를린 한국문화원이 주최하는 '한국음악 공연'이 2회 펼쳐진다. 판소리, 가야금, 대금 등 한국음악 공연을 라이프치히 시내 공연장에서 열어 한국음악에 대한 관심을 끌어올리고 관람객들의 적극적인 참여를 유발하면서 독일 및 유럽의 음악문화와 소통하는 장이 될 것으로 보인다.
한편 국도협은 '한국관 운영사업 10개년 주제'로 오는 2022년까지의 주제를 잡았다. 앞으로 한국춤(2018), 한국영화(2019), 한지와 한국화(2020), 한국불교(2021), 한국공예(2022)가 이어질 예정이다.
| Korean Pavilion at Leipzig Book Fair Appeals to Global Visitors Some 200 kinds of books, bibliographies and other documents on traditional Korean music catch the eye of guests at the book fair. The Leipzig Book Fair (German: Leipziger Buchmesse) is one of the largest book fairs in Germany. The fair takes place annually over four days in March at the Leipzig Trade Fairground in the northern part of Leipzig, Saxony. It is the first large trade meeting of the year and as such, it plays an important role in the book market and is often where new publications are first presented. The Leipzig Book Fair began as the largest book fair in Germany in 1632 when it topped the fair in Frankfurt am Main in the number of books presented. It remained on top until 1945 when Frankfurt surpassed it to regain the number one spot. After the reunification of the two Germanys, the fair moved from the Trade Fair House on the main market square to a new location where the fair experienced a renaissance and continues to grow today. Unlike other book fairs focusing on vitalizing the publishing world and exchanges of global market information, the Leipzig fair, centered on books themselves, aims to be for the public, above all, and to emphasize the relationship between the authors and the visitors to the fair. During the annual four-day fair, the German city hosts over 3,000 events both in the city and at the fairgrounds, making it one of the largest events of its kind in Europe. The events comprise a wide range of publication culture programs such as book-reading sessions and other educational and awards programs. Also during the fair, Stiftung Buchkunst, or the German Book Art Foundation, announces and exhibit the winner of its “Best Book Design from All over the World International Competition.” In particular, the Leipzig Fair is one of the first to recognize the growing market for audiobooks and incorporate this trend into its concept. Under the slogan of “Leipzig Reads Books”, the Leipzig Book Fair 2017 hosted a variety of events and festivals related to books all across the city, with the venues fully packed with presenters, visitors and spectators. The fair, held from March 23 to 26 this year, was also noted that big-name politicians and cultural figures from home and abroad attended its various functions at the extravaganza in the book industry. The visitors included Günter Wilhelm Grass, the late German novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist, sculptor, and recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature, and other world-famous veteran and rising writers hosting or attending gatherings to introduce and read their own new books throughout the fair. Korea’s International Culture Cities Exchange Association (INCCA) has installed and operated the Korean Pavilion at the German book fair since 2013, under the basic theme of Hangeul (The Korean Alphabet) for 2013, Hansik (Korean Food) in 2104, Hanbok (Traditional Korean Costume) in 2015, and Hanok (Traditional Korean Houses) in 2016, in a bid to promote the excellence of Korean culture around the world and to synthesize and compile the culture into a new dimension. Last Year, INCCA not only efficiently introduced notable content and the humanities, or the thinking arts, related with Korea’s traditional architecture but also hosted discussions on cultural exchanges between Korea and Europe including Germany, based on the above-mentioned content and the themes. During the four-day fair this year, a total of over 10,000 visitors flocked to the Korean Pavilion and experienced Korean books and culture through the exhibitions of books and videos, of which arrangements well interpreted the country’s advanced digitalized book exhibition methods. Especially, several written and visual materials, including a video featuring the reproduced progression of building Soswaewon Gwangpunggak Pavilion, one of Korea’s ancient architectural gems, attracted high attention from the visitors. The walls of the exhibition halls at the Korean Pavilion also were decorated with photographs by Goo Bon-Chang, which carried images showing off the Asian country’s prominent traditional architecture, drawing accolades from the visitors. The book fair also provided Korean books and other major publications with opportunities to be placed in several German university libraries, such as Deutsche Nationalbibliothek and those at the University of Hamburg and TU Dresden. INCCA recently told the Seoul Culture Today that it has found “a fairly large number of miswritten cultural truths, as well as wrong cultural recordings, in our history.” In this context, the organization continued, “The Korean Pavilion at the Leipzig Book Fair will have to be more actively used not only to promote Korean culture but to put it on the right track by filling up such flaws.” One of the noted activities by INCCA is to publish Korean books and other cultural and literary content in foreign languages, contributing to promoting the country’s cultural content across the globe. This year, the Korean Pavilion at the Leipzig Book Fair 2017 had a wide variety of exhibitions to display new and ancient books, documents, and video items related to Korean music. Some 200 selective books, documents, and videos on Korean music will be displayed to enable the visitors to experience the country’s long-built up music culture in a three-dimensional way. The Korean Pavilion’s host also published guidebooks to provide the visitors with information on the pavilion and the content of the Korean books displayed at the German book fair, and the three selected books on the main theme for the year in Korean and both in English and German. The three books included those on the history, humanities, philosophy and cultural traditions of Korean music and traditional musical instruments. Apart from the publications, there were two rounds of traditional Korean music concerts organized by the Korean Cultural Center in Berlin, which involved pansori (a traditional Korean style of narrative song), gayageum (a zither-like chordophone, most often with twelve strings), and daegeum (a large bamboo transverse flute). Meanwhile, INCCA plans to operate the Korean Pavilion under the themes of “Korean Dances” in 2018, “Korean Movies” in 2019, “Korean Paper (Hanji) and Paintings” in 2020, “Korean Buddhism” in 2021 and “Korean Crafts” in 2022.
